ODM launches “Optima Stroke” product

We are proud to have launched ODM’s “Optima Stroke” product at the Annual Conference of the Israel Dental Association that took place in Tel Aviv on 23-25 November 2022.

The conference’s theme was “Digital Dentistry – New Reality”, focusing on dentistry in the digital age.

Dr. Zohar Barnet-Itzhaki, one of the leading the developers of ODM’s “Optima Stroke” product, an AI/DL expert and a senior lecturer at the Rupin College, together with Dr. Shiran Sudri, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the Baruch Padeh Medical Center, Poriya,  presented a lecture titled: “Deep convolution neural network for screening carotid calcification in dental panoramic radiographs”.

Dr. Barnet-Itzhaki and Dr. Sudri focused on the importance of being able to extract new insights from existing data using AI. They demonstrated how the risk of stroke be predicted using and analyzing information present in routine dental panoramic X-rays.

The conclusions are based on a joint clinical study that included 500 anonymized panoramic photographs of patients from Poriya’s database.

They showed how carotid artery calcification can be detected in panoramic dental radiographs using ODM’s “Optima Stroke” AI platform. These calcifications can lead to the development of a stroke.  A routine screening and analysis of panoramic radiographs using the platform can predict the risk of having a stroke that stems from the blocking of the carotid arteries by fatty deposits (calcification).

The distinct conclusion that emerges from the research is that we can leverage information from existing resources. In this case we showed how also carotid calcification can be detected in panoramic radiograph regularly used to aid dentists in their work.

Routine use of AI in the healthcare system can prevent disease, saving lives and reduce expenses that would otherwise arise from hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation, nursing, and the treatment of related complications.

A special thanks to Prof. Imad Abu El-Naaj, head of the department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral and Dental Care Division at the Baruch Padeh Medical Center, Poriya, and Dr. Gil Pogozelich, ODM’s founder and CEO for the collaboration that led to the development of a commercial, lifesaving, service for better healthcare.
